A kindly woman who could be a cousin of AUNT BEE and JUNE CLEAVER offers you complimentary delicious hot chocolate (or water) and marshmallows to roast on the fire. This primo haunt benefits the fine people at ADOPT A PET, who encourage you to ADOPT DON’T SHOP!

An outdoor festival atmosphere greets you here, with beverage tents and rock music jammin’ on the PA. A crazy KISSING BOOTH PHOTO OPP had lots of selfie action to share the fun with the world on social media.

The entrance to the forest lies behind the tents, leading to an excellent outdoors experience from a small army of volunteers.

We love this haunt for so many reasons! If you love dogs as well as haunting, this is a MUST SEE HAUNT.

ZIOPTIS SEZ 2021 - KING OF THE HILL

Wowser! There is SO much at this family friendly haunt your head will spin, with the biggest variety of primo haunt scenes we’ve ever seen at any haunt.

Animatronics are interspersed with live actors to mix it up big time. There is SO much here it’s pointless to even attempt describing it all.

However, one new feature this year worth mentioning is a new DISTORTIONS prop that will knock your socks off! You could buy a small house for the price they paid for this masterpiece.

Most of the haunt is outdoors, but there are covered areas too like the FRESH DONUTS being made in a room at the end. After a crazy journey through every possible imaginable scene, there’s nothing like a donut and fresh Michigan cider to top off the experience.

The mere fact that this haunt is even open this year is a Herculean feat, as they suffered massive damage when a giant tree was uprooted during a violent storm. But even Mother Nature couldn’t thwart this dynamic community spirited haunt, and they rebuilt it bigger and badder than ever before!

This haunt flew “under the radar” for years before we finally experienced it for the first time in 2018, instantly becoming a MUST SEE HAUNT for us!

ZIOPTIS SEZ 2021 - NEW HAUNT TAKES OFF WITH A BLAST

The moment you arrive, you can tell something BIG is going on here. The giant building is lit in red, and a quad search light guides the masses to the madness.

Your first stop is the ticket lobby, and is a masterpiece onto itself. An exquisite chandelier looms above, while giant spiders and skeletons keep vigil.

Photo opps in the lobby help you share the fun with the rest of the world on social media.

There’s a forest walk, and three walk through indoor haunts.

First we went to PHRYTE MANOR DEAD & BREAKFAST, whose entrance is outside the main building. It’s a relentless barrage of guests you wouldn’t want to meet at a BNB!

Our next stop was the PHRYTE DOLL COMPANY FACTORY TOUR, a masterpiece of creepiness with exquisite detail. We really liked the collection of doll clothes...without the dolls! GREAT STUFF.

PHRYTE WING SUNNYDALE HOSPITAL completes the indoor haunts before you venture on to the outdoor journey PHRYTE GARDEN FIELD OF SCREAMS.

If you survive all that, you can unwind behind the castle at the C PUB featuring an outdoor patio with fire pits, drinks, food & music.

Or put on your dancing shoes, and bust a move inside the castle at PHRYTE CLUB with crafted brews & spirits, dancing, and food.

Part haunt and part nite club, FRIGHT VILLAGE has it all!

This year AZRA has added 13 new rooms, and the result is stunning!

The party starts in the queue line area, converted to CLUB AZRA complete with a ROCKIN’ DJ sporting a laser light show.

A mysterious talking head greets you upon entry, then all bets are off as you are thrust into a high intensity madhouse from beyond!

An intricate system of elevated walkways with metal see-through design is a unique twist here, and we loved the crazy disorientation with mirrors and strobe lights.

Are you afraid of clowns? They’re hoping you are, and you won’t be able to miss them thanks to fabulous ULTRAVIOLET BLACK LIGHT decor, outfits, and makeup.

The fun does not end with the haunt, as multiple ESCAPE ROOMS are also on site. Wandering weirdo’s add to the show, with clever banter and great costumes / makeup.

This is a relative newby to the DETROIT HAUNT SCENE, and we predict it will only become better and better in years to come!

ZIOPTIS SEZ 2021 - A FOREST TOUR DE FORCE LIKE NO OTHER

We decided to start our tour this year at TERRORFIED FOREST in PINCKNEY. In a word it was...PHENOMENAL!

We’ve been going to this haunt for decades, and they’ve never failed to amaze us. The new show at TERRORFIED is a relentless bonkers off-the-chart feast for the senses!

There were many creative wondrous spooky adventures awaiting...

Everywhere you look there’s new spooky surprises led off with a STUNNING LIQUID SKY ROOM and later a UNIQUE TWIN-SPIN DOUBLE BLACK HOLE that’s a TOTAL RUSH!  **Hint - if the motion sensation overwhelms you in a BLACK HOLE just close your eyes and the feeling vanishes!**

We saw the TABLES TURNED ON AN EVIL CLOWN who’s been secured in a dental chair.  It seems his fate includes  DENTAL SURGERY GONE SERIOUSLY AWRY. Clown haters will love this!

This truly is a MAGICAL FOREST! The amount of work they’ve put in is astounding! There’s zero lag in the action between scenes, and countless spooky creatures on trees and posts keep vigil. 

This is all outdoors, mind you...the amount of preparation is staggering!

One of our faves here was the PUMPKIN FANTASY LAND. There’s tons of super bright pumpkins and tiny oranges lights everywhere! 

The presentation is spot on start to finish.

Be sure to wear shoes that are appropriate for hiking in the woods - no high heels, ladies.

ZIOPTIS SEZ 2021 - OHIO FAVE DELIVERS THE GOODS BIG TIME

This haunt is a bargain at $25 for THREE HAUNTS!

The new show is DEAD IN THE WATER, and even with the poncho they give you it’s guaranteed you’ll get wet! Excellent sound, lighting, and monster interaction throughout. LOVED THE ALLIGATORS.

The 2nd haunt is a strange mix of sensory deprivation and 3 excellent LIQUID SKY ROOMS with a big difference. Instead of horizontal flat beam green lasers, they’re mounted to project VERTICAL beams. The point of convergence gives the look of a giant geometric cube. The result is absolutely STUNNING!

The 3rd haunt takes you into the main building of Ghostly Manor where their primo original haunt is. THIS is the haunt that’s OPEN YEAR ROUND! Yup, that’s right...YEAR ROUND. And you don’t have to wait until dark either, they open after 12 noon!

The exit of the 3rd haunt leads you to the main building where there’s lots more fun stuff to do.

This facility is a DREAM COME TRUE for kids and their parents. There are 10 different attractions including a skating rink to keep kids busy while mom and dad relax...

ZIOPTIS SEZ 2021 - THEY’RE BAAACK, WITH A VENGEANCE!

After being on Covid hiatus last year, THE SCREAM MACHINE is back in action and they’re in perfect form.

The queue line sets the mood with fabulous sound and cool decor, as before. But the rest of the journey is new, with excellent scares and surprises at every twist and turn.

NURSE PAULA greets you and gives you the spiel before sending you on your way. She was excellent!

Another of our favorite characters was the highly eccentric and probably insane DR. STRACH. It seems all his patients have expired, so he’s looking for recruits. Oh lucky day, it could be you!  ;)

Excellent actors, sound effects, and lighting throughout.

Action packed from beginning to end! The HELLEVATOR sequence was perfect, and the BLACK HOLE thrusts you into a rotating tunnel that creates a perfect illusion/sensation of spinning. STILL A BIG WINNER - PRIMO CLASSIC HAUNTING!

One of our favorite gags is near the end, featuring an “insect” that TOTALLY WOWED US.

Also, there’s two 5 minute ESCAPE ROOMS you can challenge yourself with if you dare.

The crowds have returned, and rightfully so as THE SCREAM MACHINE roars back as DOWNRIVER’S LONGEST RUNNING HAUNT!

ZIOPTIS SEZ 2021 - NEW KID ON THE BLOCK NAILS IT

This is a two part haunt - upstairs and the basement.

Oh, BTW inside it’s an actual abandoned mental hospital where many unspeakable human atrocities occurred.

Your journey starts here much as is might have many moons ago, when many unfortunate souls found themselves walking up the stairs to the main entrance of this elegant looking building.

They went seeking help for serious mental problems, but for most it became a prison / torture chamber from which there was no escape. It’s thought that many of these unfortunate souls still haunt the building to this very day!

Upon entering the lobby, all seems well. Two giant black & white framed portraits of friendly looking people including a girl and her dog adorn the walls. But look carefully; there’s something sinister there.

Once admitted, you find yourself confronting all varieties of nightmares and hideous “patients.”

The ambiance is off the charts because much of what you see is exactly as it was left many moons ago, abandoned to collect dust. It looks old. It feels old. It smells old. IT IS OLD!

The building spits you out, and down a ramp you go to the basement where especially heinous things happened. The echoes of the past come alive, with deep-bass industrial droning sounds hinting of a giant machine out to steal your soul and sell it to the lowest bidder! haha

A whacked out juxtaposition hits when old meets new here. ULTRA HIGH TECH LIGHTING has been installed in this old building. COLD SPARK PYRO and a TESLA COIL crank the intensity to eleven! And ADVANCED PROJECTION MAPPING TECHNOLOGIES bring ALIENS into the picture like never before at any haunted attraction to our knowledge!

Massive amounts of old analog electronic equipment remain just as it was, including a giant round console with tons of buttons, dials, and such. We’ve never seen so much old gear and gadgets!

Excellent sound and lighting throughout, and the actors were largely on cue with good scares.

This was an opportunity too good to pass up - an authentic spooky building out of use for many years and the site of many Paranormal Investigations. And now it’s an INCREDIBLE 30,000 SQUARE FOOT HAUNTED ATTRACTION!

As debuts go, this is a doozie! The existence of a giant abandoned mental hospital is an opportunity that was just waiting to be taken advantage of, and this wouldn’t have happened without some big help from England!

It goes back to MANCHESTER, ENGLAND where a young man in contact with THE HOUSE OF SHOCK would eventually be offered the job of Operations Manager for ELOISE ASYLUM. It was a no-brainer, and now we have an INTERNATIONAL TEAM OF MANIACS / MAD SCIENTISTS in charge at the Asylum!

ELOISE ASYLUM promises to be AN EVOLVING HAUNT according to the operator, and we warmly welcome them to the DETROIT HAUNT SCENE.

ZIOPTIS SEZ 2021 - HUSH HITS ANOTHER HOME RUN

Where are we? Is this a haunt in Michigan or UNIVERSAL STUDIOS?

HUSH takes haunting into a new dimension with their new show HUSH FALLS GHOST TOWN.

The unique artistic flair at HUSH is one-of-a-kind with art from all over. You’re immersed in the exquisite decor of an elegant mansion, but then find yourself facing hideous terror at the depths of despair...OH NO!!!

The actors and makeup are all spectacular, and better yet they all hit their cues perfectly. Gag synchronization can make or break the show, and HUSH was spot on throughout.

Attention to detail is a passion at HUSH. One of our faves is the FABULOUS DOLL ROOM...WOWSER!

We’ve been following this haunt since their 2013 debut on Ford Road (also in Westland) at a much smaller location. They have motivation galore and it shows - this haunt always packs in the crowds, and rightfully so.

DISNEYLAND & DISNEY WORLD are far away from DETROIT. But that’s okay, because you can have a DISNEY LEVEL EXPERIENCE right here at HUSH HAUNTED ATTRACTION in WESTLAND!

And there’s even more with HUSH that you’ll be hearing about later, including a MURDER MYSTERY DINNER THEATER that was put on hold previously due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It seems like it’s fate, because this property was formerly an ENTERTAINMENT MULTIPLEX called SKATELAND WEST.

Back in the day as Skateland, this place was hopping year round! How cool to see it moving towards that direction again. There’s just so many good vibes that have accumulated here through the years, and many more to come based on what we’ve seen from this dynamic young haunt on a mission. KUDOS TO HUSH!
